Like my grandmother always says, “. . . keeps the doctor away”! And what better time to enjoy this delicious fruit, than Autumn! Before we switch into winter mode, why not take a little day trip and go apple picking before Thanksgiving. It’s great as a date, family outing with kids, or with good friends!
Apple picking has proven to be one of the many perks of living in the Bay Area, but there are apple orchards all over. As newlyweds, my husband and I keep searching for cute date ideas for our first year together and this was perfect!
Planning an apple picking trip is very easy and you end up with a basketful of pretty shiny fruit. I browsed the internet for apple orchards in my area (you may have to drive a little), read reviews, and called to make sure there would be apples available that weekend. There’s usually around $1-2 per pound charge for as many apples as you can carry. Cute woven baskets recommended!
We had so much fun apple picking in Petaluma that we decided to go again at Apple Hill with family!
And what to do with all those apples . . . bake a pie of course! Now I’m not usually the one to bake pies (my mom dominates that category) but I gave it a shot.
I used a combination of a Martha Stewart pie crust & a Paula Dean filling recipes that were both super easy and delicious!
If apple season has passed in your area, you can still make the pie with store bought apples or save the trip for next fall!
