Sorry I missed you all last week. We’re back at the cottage now and wrapping up the painting in Milo’s bedroom and refinishing vintage twin beds we found for the space. I shared a little bit of our progress on Instagram. I still have a few more things to order for the room but most of the decor is in route to our house. It’s been tricky navigating all the shipping delays! And luckily my father-in-law has volunteered his time to help Joe with all the renovating and it’s been super helpful!
I started using a wonderful tool, Spoak, to help to design the space and it’s made the process of decorating so much easier. My ideas were scattered in Pinterest boards, browsing windows and in my head, ha! Using Spoak, I created a mood board, simple floor plan, and product rendering to see how everything ties together. It’s a really simple to use too for interior designers and easy to share with clients. I love it and am planning to upgrade my membership for access to the design course materials.
As you can see I really love natural color palettes for children’s spaces. It’s so soothing and dreamy. I want the room to feel like a magical forest (because we are living in an actual forest) and be surrounded by decor inspired by animals, flowers and trees. Green has been my favorite color to use for Milo and I’m continuing that tradition from his woodland nursery.
This is the simple floorpan I created using Spoak. I’m really happy with how easy it is to get a general since of what can and can’t fit in the space. I knew the layout would be tricky with slopped ceilings and finding the right bed or beds. I really want to include two beds in the space for other children to visit, but I wasn’t sure if we could fit two. Luckily it’s a perfect fit and there’s still space for a little play area, storage and a dresser near the bathroom.
The big question mark is the accent wall with the little built in shelves. Originally planned for wallpaper but stay on budget has been tough. I am highly considering splurging on the paper I love or figuring out a way to hand-paint.
I’ve come up with two ideas to cover the wall and created a rendering for each. I added a few of the decor accessories and toys I’m planning to purchase and wanted to get a sense of how everything will tie together.
The wall is just for the accent wall that sits tucked behind the bed, next to the closet. In the rest of the room we chose to paint. we completely reset the room with white primer from Clare and used an oil-based primer to sufficiently cover the previous mural on the ceiling. I love using Clare paint! It’s Black-female-owned brand and it’s one of the safest water-based paints on the market. We used it in Milo’s nursery, our bedroom and the guest bedroom here at the cottage so far. Normally we don’t to use the prior but the previous owner painted with so many vibrant colors it was the only way to get a clean start in this space.
We are wrapping up painting all the trim and details. I decided to use Whipped and Current Mood from Clare Paint as the paneling and wall colors. We still need to finish painting some of the doors and the built in shelves but I am waiting to decided on the little accent wall.
I’m excited to share how the next steps turn out. We’re almost past the hard parts and labor intensive changes to the room. Once the painting, accent wall and beds are done we can bring in all the pretty decor accents. I do still need to hunt for wall sconces, a rug and window treatments for the balcony doors. Halfway there!
