Ever get a restless feeling when you walk into your home? I certainly do and our bedroom was the culprit. When I first decorated almost two years ago, I kept a very simple color palette. Purples, grey and white. Well, I’m tired of it now. Decor always needs a refresh after a while. I needed something brighter and cheerful especially for the summer months. Above is a little preview of my project in progress. I’m loving my new duvet from Crane & Canopy. Read through to follow my brainstorming.
So here’s the old room design. Lots of purple in many shades. We aren’t able to paint, (ugh I hate renting!) so the walls are left white.
I added a little reading corner earlier this year, which helped. Still, I wanted to add in a few other colors to this palette.
My hunt for color inspiration began with my love of flowers. Coral is one of my favorite colors and I always buy coral blooms whenever I can. I’m a fan of both pink and orange corals and love to mix the two. I started combing through all my flower pictures and found this photo I took in Mendocino.
I knew I wanted to convert the bedroom with coral as the leader, but would need complimentary colors to blend my existing pieces. At first, I considered a very bright and modern look like the one below. The green and blue matched with white and grey neutrals would easily blend a lot of my existing pieces. I have a ton of blue to share from my living room and green from my office. Also incorporating those colors help create a more seamless transition throughout our home.
One other source of inspiration was our trip to Paris. I adored the pastel colors in shops like Laduree and palaces like Versailles. I knew I wanted to recreate that feeling at home. Channeling my inner Marie-Antoinette, I bought a vintage dessert print during to trip to hang in our room. It’s similar to the one shown below.
A literal interpretation would be this room below, but I think I can survive without this. My husband definitely appreciates avoiding this one. But hey if you’ve ever wanted a cupcake-like room, here you are!
I also considered an entirely different direction, without coral, shown below. I think if we lived in a minimally designed space it could work beautifully. I love the linen fabrics and warm metallics. It’s definitely a sophisticated palette, but not pieces I’d naturally pick. So I can appreciate the design and save for later.
What I am working on to complete the space (going with coral for sure), is a DIY chandelier. It is one hundred percent influenced by my trips to Laduree and Pierre Herme. Has sort of a French macaron and candy feel with the round/sphere shapes. Below is a photoshop rendering of the design and colors I plan to use.
I can’t wait to reveal the full redesign! I plan to finish before summer, so stay tuned. You can catch updates on Instagram in the meantime.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
