We are getting the cottage ready to stay during the holidays. Sitting around on air mattresses was beginning to cause lots of aches and pains. So I set out last month to create a pretty thorough design plan to make the home functional for Christmas. However, I feel extremely uncomfortable by spending a lot at once so this design process definitely made me feel a bit crazy. Of course the house is not completely furnished yet, but buying the essentials like a bed, places to sit and linens were a significant chunk. I spent a lot of time researching products and keeping an eye for any upcoming sales. Overall, I think I did well with sourcing and not spending too much, though I may take a few things back that aren’t as necessary as I thought.
My process for designing always starts with a general style and color concept like what I shared in this previous post. I actually came up with the pink, green, and neutral tones color scheme this summer when I first saw the house listing. It’s no secret that I love pink and green is such a beautiful complimentary color. Specifically I wanted to use shades of rose pink paired with a eucalyptus or slightly cooler green. I pulled color inspiration from all the cedar trees growing around the home and the garden.
So far I’ve purchased the major items, like I shared on IGTV earlier this week. Almost everything is put together but we are going to paint the living room and master bedroom before everything is completely set in its place. The guest room is filled with smaller furniture that we moved up to the house last week. A lot of the furniture pieces I ordered arrived earlier than expected which definitely surprised us, hence why the paint isn’t done yet. Still, we couldn’t wait to put chairs and seating together because we wanted the comfort of lounging and sitting down at the table for meals.
When I started researching, I combed through my go-to furniture stores that I’ve used over the years and are typically in my price range. I drew floorpans to make sure pieces would fit, although it’s sometimes hard to know until the decor arrives in person. I definitely have some rearranging and layouts to test in the new year.
I did find a lot of great small home accessories during the Black Friday sales like towels, baskets, bakeware, hooks and hardware. I browsed Zara Home and H&M Home because their prices are affordable and grabbed a few accessories on sale from Anthropologie. I also pulled a lot from my own online shop especially for the kitchen and dining. I’m really excited to have some of my own brand in the home. I’ll write a separate post for the kitchen and dining products later.
That’s the round up so far! You may be thinking where is the green? Paint is part of the plan to bring in the green tones. Also, I still have to hunt for area rugs and get our wingbacks custom upholstered. Yes it is a lot of pink, but that’s what I imagine when I think of a dreamy fairy tale. Greens, muted pinks and floral prints. I am playing with a different color scheme for the lower guest level, more soft blues and purples that will brighten space a lot more. I will keep sharing photos on Instagram as we make progress, there’s definitely going to be a lot of updates over the next year or so with bigger renovations to the house. I wish we could get on an HGTV renovation show to get through some of these projects!
