Hey folks! Today I’m sharing a DIY that’s perfect for summer entertaining. I love creating unique flower decor and this one is inspired by preppy nautical style. This nautical themed centerpiece is also a little twist on the traditional red, white and blue for July 4th! It’s a really simple arrangement and you can choose any type of flower you wish to recreate the look. I originally shared this DIY on Casa & Company and now I’m happy to share it with all of you!
Materials
- Choice of three flowers (white peonies, pink ranunculus and blue delphinium shown here)
- Small to medium vase
- Braided rope or twine (can be found at any craft store)
- Striped ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Flower shears
- Newspaper, craft paper (to protect table or counter)
Instructions
First prep the vase with a quick and easy DIY. Using the twine or rope, cover the rim of the vase. Wrap the twine around as many times as wanted and tie in a knot to secure. Then select a striped ribbon to create a small flower accent. Fold the ribbon back and forth, rotating each time, to create a flower/star shape. Use the glue gun to secure each fold with just a little dab of hot glue. Once dry, glue the flower onto the twine border. Be careful not to glue onto the actual vase.
To create a beautiful nautical inspired arrangement, choose at least three different flowers. Try using bouquets of small, medium and large bloom flowers. Think about color as you shop for flowers too. Incorporating a blue flower like hydrangeas or delphinium is the perfect way to create the nautical theme. Classic white flowers are beautiful summer arrangements too, but nothing screams summer like a little pop of color. Look for bold blooms in classic summer flowers like peonies and dahlias.
Every arrangement should be tailored to the vase. Taller vases usually need more blooms to create a balanced centerpiece. If you’re working with a smaller flower budget, opt for smaller, rounder vases. You can purchase fewer flowers and still have a beautiful full bouquet. To start the arrangement, place the larger blooms in the vase. Start filling in the gaps with the small and medium blooms. Make sure the flowers rest gently on the vase’s rim and sit close together all around.
Place your arrangement at the center of any summer potluck, soiree or backyard bbq. It will add that necessary touch of style and beauty to your celebration.
