Happy Friday!
It’s been a busy week of crafting, editing and prepping for a mini vacation to SoCal next week. Today’s post features an awesome weekend DIY for your home inspired by Glade’s new fragrance Blooming Peony & Cherry. You’ll catch a peak of their candle and wax melts in the post. This sweet flirty scent and wonderful pink hue encouraged me to finally make my mornings and nights a little more special. I finally have a routine for pampering myself and jotting down fresh ideas as I awake and head to bed.
For years I’ve wanted to add a vanity to my bedroom, but couldn’t find the right style for small spaces. A chunky desk style vanity would create very tight corners in our room. I stopped trying to find the perfect small vanity and instead took an inexpensive shelf and converted to a floating vanity! The minimal design is perfect for keeping our room spacious. I added a small pouf for function and rug to frame the area. I found all building supplies at the hardware store for under $20!
It’s really easy to install and won’t take more than a Saturday morning to complete!
Materials
- Single wall shelf in white or to painted to match wall color (My shelf dimensions: 36″ by 12″)
- Two to three decorative wall brackets and appropriate screws
- Power drill or screw driver with phillips head attachment
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Leveler (optional but very helpful!)
Instructions
- Hanging a shelf is a little tricky by yourself, so if you can grab an assistant please do. I did this on my own, so I just need to triple check my measurements.
- Start by determining how high you want to place the shelf. I started off 31 inches above the ground and realized it was too hight for my pouf seat. I lowered to the shelf height to 29 inches instead. Be sure to select a height where you can comfortably place your elbows on the table.
- Mark the drill holes for the brackets with a pencil. Hold the shelf at this height with the leveler on top. This way you can tell if your drill marks are a little slanted or uneven before you damage your wall. *Note* also make sure there aren’t any pipes or studs where you plan to install the shelf! Simply tap and listen for a hollow echo to ensure nothing is there.
- Attach the brackets to the shelf. I placed mine about three inches away from the edge for balance. You can add a third in the middle if you plan to place anything extremely heavy on top of the vanity.
- Install the brackets into the wall and carefully hold the shelf with your other hand (or have an assistant do this). Triple check that the shelf is even by placing the leveler on top again before drilling the screws all the way in. Now add flowers!
See simple! The floating shelf looks great painted the same color as your wall giving the illusion of an invisible shelf. My space feels exactly the same size after installing and I still have plenty of space to walk around the side of the bed.
My mornings are now filled with flirty lipsticks, blushes and eyeshadows while my nights are the chance to paint my nails. I keep small notebooks for ideas and inspiration or for writing notes to myself. And bonus for you, I created a downloadable printable of my Beyonce inspired 4″x 6″ notecard!
