Happy Tuesday!
This week I’m taking a little vacation in San Diego and Los Angeles. Think of it as a grown-up version of spring break, so minus the tequila shots and bikinis. While in LA, I plan to head to a couple book signings for my favorite bloggers turned authors. Hopefully the lighting is good and I can share a few pictures with you guys! Also, Ana and I are prepping for our next styling and Instagram workshop in San Francisco. You can check out the class details on our ticket page!
Today I’m going to share a simple flower DIY I did for Casa and Company a couple of weeks ago. I used a beautiful bouquet of ranunculus. I picked up a $5 bouquet from Trader Joe’s and a decorative birdcage on sale at Michaels. Total cost was under $20!
Materials
- 1-2 bouquets of medium blossom flowers (ranunculus shown here)
- Flower pruners
- Small glass vase
- Decorative birdcage, available at craft stores
- Flower frog and floral putty
- Floral wire (optional)
Instructions
Start by choosing which flowers you’ll use in the arrangement. Depending on the size of the flower, about 10 stems can fit inside a small birdcage. Place a small piece of flower putty on the bottom of the flower frog and stick in the bottom of the vase. Fill the glass vase with water and place in the base of the birdcage. It’s easier to assemble the arrangement inside the cage then move it later on.
Add the flowers one at time, pushing the stems into flower frog so that they are secure. Cut the flowers at different lengths, some resting on the rim of the vase and others up to the top of the cage. The varying heights will create a full look inside the cage. Note if you having a hard time to get the flowers to stand, use floral wire for frame and reenforcement. You can bind a few flowers together, if you have gaps, or use the floral wire as a splint to keep a stem straight.
If there are any gaps, add greens, small buds or leaves to fill in the space. Close the birdcage lid and allow some of the buds and blossoms to poke through. Hang in a window or use as a centerpiece for your spring festivity!
I hope you get a chance to try out this arrangement. Its perfect for spring gatherings, weddings, Mother’s Day, showers, you name it! Use as a centerpiece or hang from the ceiling. A cluster of these would look beautiful near a window!
