When we first bought this cottage last year, I knew I wanted to create a theme throughout the home deeply rooted in whimsy and fairytales. My color palette for the home originated from my love of flowers and the flora you would find growing in the forest or a meadow. I also have a love of English and French country styles and the architecture of our new home plays so well with these styles. It is the first room that we wanted to tackle and complete. I’m so happy to partner with Joss & Main to create the bedroom of our dreams!
The space had awful carpet flooring that had seen better days. First project was to rip this out entirely and install laminate flooring. Not the easiest task given the house is 100 years-old and the floors weren’t perfectly level. We did have to do the floor twice before we realized finishing nails would help secure the flooring in tricky spots. A very easy $12 fix when we thought we’d have to hire a professional, ha!
After the flooring, I started playing around with color and considering different paints. I loved the idea of keeping a plant/flower theme for each room. Every fairytale I loved growing up had some sort of beautiful flower or tree scenery. One of my favorites is the forest/bayou scene from Princess & The Frog with all the animals at the frog wedding. My favorite flower is the camellia, for its beautiful petals especially the deep pink varieties. I wanted the bedroom to feel as if we were sleeping inside a flower. Full color all around. I knew that the right shades of pink would be soothing and dreamy. I was so happy to find the perfect shades of Rose’ Season and Pink Sky from Clare paint.
Once I decided on paint color it was time to decide on decor. I had a couple vintage pieces already, the nightstands and the previous owner left the cabinet. We needed all the other basics: a bed, bedding, drapes and a rug. I searched for weeks for the perfect canopy bed (the ultimate princess style!) and found a great affordable king canopy bed frame from Wayfair. I was so happy with its old-world style. We’ve never had a king bed before and it’s been a lifechanger. Our little family can pile in and everyone has their own space, cat included.
I realized with such a bold choice for wall color, I would need to use muted and simple bedding. My eventual goal is to add a beautiful pink chinoiserie wallpaper behind the bed, so I didn’t want to choose bedlinen that would distract. I am a huge fan of linen bedding and found the perfect pink duvet set at Joss & Main. I doubled-up and found a quilt set by The Jungalow in a contrasting dark pink to layer in the cold months and switch to in the summer when we don’t need the thick duvet. I love that the bedding matched the paint colors so well. The linens and the wall colors create this warm pink glow in the room that is so soft and lovely. We just melt into bed at night, it is seriously heaven.
Pillows are my obsession and I wanted to fit as many as possible on this bed. There are four king-sized pillows plus five decorative throw pillows. I knew the pink might be a little overwhelming, so for contrast I found a pair of pale blue throw pillows and blue & white pillow at Joss & Main. They add just enough variation and compliment all the pink shades on the bed. I also sought out pillows that mixed the dark and light pink colors. I am so happy this geometric velvet pillow (which has migrated to our sofa at times!) and this adorable pink mini lumbar pillow. There is no shortage of comfort. It is perfect for breakfast in bed or binging a favorite show. I have watched many Sister, Sister episodes in complete comfort already.
On the practical side, I need to add decorative elements that help warm the room. We are in the mountains and it gets quite chilly at night. Yes we use a space heater but I also wanted to incorporate functional pieces to help keep the warmth in the space. First, I searched for drapes that not only were blackout, but have a thermal feature to help block the cold draft from the windows. These Floral room darkening curtains were perfect. They also cancel noise from the road so that we hardly hear a car drive by the house. I love the blue and white damask pattern too and it helps break of up the pink saturated room as well. Next, I needed to find a rug to add warmth and texture to the bedroom. I found a beautiful pink and grey Persian style, with tiny hints of blue. It’s a 8ft x1 0ft by Loloi and it is so soft. It’s a flatware style but has a little bit of a velvety texture. I didn’t want something too delicate since we have a toddler and cat. I love the vintage look and it fits our cottage style perfectly.
I’m really excited about our bedroom and from the little tidbits I’ve shared on Instagram, you all seem to love it too! It is the dreamy, romantic, flower-inspired space that I hoped to create. I have a few more elements to incorporate, but we’re so happy to have a room that feels more complete. I’m on a hunt for more vintage accents and artwork.
