Tea or coffee? I choose tea every time! Every day I have at least one cup to start the day of right or unwind in the evening. Most of of time I shop around for teas, but every now and then it’s nice to brew my own!
My husband is in the midst of brewing a rose-hibiscus beer this season, so I stole a few of his ingredients and made my own tea.
Hibiscus is extremely easy to brew and creates a beautiful deep pink color. It can have quite the bitter taste when strong, so adding a little sugar is needed. Regular sugar is fine, but rose syrup is even better. I love using rose syrup in cocktails like a bellini too! So follow these simple directions and you’ll have a bright pink cup of tea in just a few minutes.
Hibiscus Tea with Rose Syrup
What you’ll need:
- A tablespoon of dried hibiscus petals – one serving
- Rose syrup
- Boiling hot water
- Coffee filter
- String or baker’s twine
With loose hibiscus petals, you’ll need to create your own tea bag. It’s super ease, just grab a coffee filter and trim down the sides. Add the tablespoon of hibiscus to the coffee filter and tie off with baker’s twine or another food safe string. Super easy!
Allow the tea to brew until the tea reaches a bright pink color. If you like a stronger taste, let it brew until color is very deep like a berry.
Once the tea is ready, bring out the rose syrup. You won’t need much but if you love the rose flavor you can always enhance with a little rose water. Rose water is very strong so be careful or your tea will taste like perfume!
This tea really is delicious and fragrant. It’s the perfect combination for a raspberry flavored pastry. The hibiscus leaves may be a little hard to find. We’re lucky to have a spice shop up the street, but Whole Foods or a tea shop should sell the loose petals too. You can always buy your prepackaged hibiscus tea, but making your own is such a better value and fun!
